Hunting and farming: two approaches to looking for work

Many years of reading job applications has revealed two very different approaches to finding work adopted by job seekers. Some, more often women, opt for the highly targeted low-volume strategy where only thoroughly researched prospects are approached and a carefully honed and CV put forward. These I call job hunters. Others, more usually males, will adopt the high-volume scattergun, some might say promiscuous approach, throwing their CV at any remotely relevant Tom, Dick or Harriet as this will surely result in some flicker of interest and a place on somebody's shortlist. This type of candidate or applicant is more akin to a farmer, scattering a multitude of seeds in the hope that some will produce. There are problems with both approaches and probably the ideal strategy is somewhere in between the two.
